Got a picky pup? Have you tried rotating your protein offerings yet? Not only is it exciting for your pup to get something different from time to time, it’s also beneficial for their health. A diet with a range of nutrients and varied fat and protein sources is beneficial for your pup. Utilizing different protein sources and oils promotes a balanced diet that optimizes on the different amino acids, vitamins, and essential fatty acids that are necessary to maintain health.

Rotating proteins and oils is a great way to keep your pup's diet interesting and ensure they're getting all the nutrients they need. By rotating different proteins and oils, you can help to prevent allergies and intolerances, and you can also provide your pup with a wider variety of nutrients.

Let's take a look at some examples of protein sources:

  • Beef is a source of omega-3 fatty acids and is abundant in most minerals, including iron, selenium and zinc.
  • Poultry contains vitamin B12, which helps to keep the body's nerves and blood cells healthy.

  • Eggs are high in choline and iodine, this is supportive for liver and thyroid health. The body needs choline to make phosphatidylcholine, which is vital for healthy cell membranes.

  • Fish, such as salmon and sardines, are also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and contain vitamins A and D

Feeding a more balanced and species appropriate diet can also promote a healthy microbiome. When you rotate foods in your pup’s diet, their digestive tract will be exposed to various beneficial bacteria, which can help reduce seasonal allergies, support digestion, and promote a healthy skin and coat.

A limited selection of proteins and whole foods can hinder the growth and survival of a diverse microbiome, so be sure to change up your pup’s diet to help maintain their immune system.

You can also provide tons of variety by using our different base mixes. Our base mixes provide a variety of whole foods with their own unique nutrient profile. We encourage pup parents to rotate through these when possible.
